10 Tips to Better Design

1.Simple Solutions

Simple solutions can have a dramatic impact to an existing space.

Think:  Contrast, Color, Creativity, and Comfort.  Look at one of these

elements to build upon your design.  For example:  Painting is one of the

simplest and cost effective ways to change a space.

2.  Fabric First

There are many paint choices available, but fewer choices for fabric.  Plan to pick your flooring and fabrics first, and pick your paint later.  Generally, light shades of neutral color can help to keep rooms light and airy, but don't be afraid of a patterned wall treatment or a few richly colored walls. These alternative treatments can often push the walls out and make the space appear larger.

3.  Greens

Potted plants and flowers in interesting vases add warmth to interiors.  Consider pots such as       galvanized steel, aluminum and lined wooden boxes to accentuate your surroundings.

4. Art Matters

Large, colorful, or carefully grouped artwork can give a room the focal point to define and create a mood. Smaller, well chosen items can draw people in closer, creating intimacy in a space. To keep from hanging art too high, the center of artwork should be at eye level, or fall approximately 7" above the sofa height.

5.  See the Light

Proper lighting can make or break any space. To create the proper effect, consider how the space is used (i.e. reading, v. entertaining), who will be using the space and when, what will be room's point of focus, and whether or not it is flattering. Adding lower level ambient lighting can soften a space at night while softly tinted lights create mood and flatters skin tones.

6.  Location, location

The right thing can just seem so wrong if not placed in the best location. Think about who will use the space and how will it be used. Consider how one will move about the space and where you want the focus of their attention to fall. Think creatively when arranging furniture.

7.  Its all about the Windows

Window treatments can help define a space by emphasizing a room's features or minimizing flaws. Hang draperies 6" above the window to visually increase height and create vertical lines that draw the eyes up. Lofts with large windows benefit from solar shades which can be rolled up for maximum view.

8.  Organization

Size matters in interior design and when space is an issue, creating multiple uses for items is the best way to get more for less. A bed with drawers underneath is a great way to maximize storage or a boxy side table that is strong enough to be used as seating is a great way to make the most of your design dollar.

9.Know When to Say When

Some things are just better left to the experts. A design professional can help you get the most for your money, time and space. They can take your ideas and turn them into real solutions. In addition, they have the inside scoop on the latest styles, products and unique vendors. Plus, they can provide you peace of mind and remove the worry from space design.

10.  Accessorize!

Adding a few accessories to your home, such as a mirror, vase, etc.  adds  a personal touch to your home.  When visitors walk into your home, they want to see your personality shine through.
